Today we have a special History Kicks Ass in honor of Veterans Day. Rocky Bleier is the kind of badass that legends are made of. He was a member of the 1966 Notre Dame national championship team, and the captain of the team in his senior season of 1967. He was a promising rookie in the 1968 season, but was drafted that December for service in the Vietnam War. He was shipped out in May of 1969. That August, Rocky was shot in the left thigh during an ambush. While laying wounded, a grenade exploded nearby and lodged shrapnel into his right foot and thigh. For his injuries and courage under fire, Bleier was awarded a Bronze Star and a Purple Heart. Laying in his hospital bed, Bleier was told by his doctor that his playing days were over. But later on in his recovery, he received a postcard from Steelers’ owner Art Rooney that read “Rock, The team’s not doing well. We need you. Art Rooney.” That was all the motivation Rocky needed.

Bleier showed up at training camp a year after he was wounded, weighing only 180 pounds and walking with a limp and intense pain from some shrapnel that was still lodged in his foot. He spent another 2 years getting himself back in playing shape, despite being cut twice in that span. In ‘73, he found his way onto the roster blocking and tackling on the special teams. By 1974, he had earned himself a permanent spot in the Steelers starting lineup. The next year, Rocky ran for 1,000 yards and the Steelers won the Superbowl, the first of four in the next six years.

Kick-Ass Fact: Bleier retired after the last of his championship victories, and now spends his time as a motivational speaker telling people to quit crying, rub some dirt on it, walk it off, and man up. I imagine, after hearing his life story, his audiences are pretty motivated after those speeches.
