History Kicks Ass: Rusty Kuntz

That’s right.  Rusty Kuntz.  This is a real person.  A person who played baseball.  A person who is currently the first base coach for the Kansas City Royals, with the name “Kuntz” displayed proudly across the back of his jersey.  He had a short and relatively undistinguished 7 year career in the MLB, playing for the White Sox, Twins, and Tigers.  Apparently nobody minded trading him directly to a division rival.  Kuntz has stayed active in baseball since his retirement, probably just so he can continue having his name prominently displayed on a jersey for the delight of onlookers everywhere.  Three cheers to Rusty Kuntz: a man who proves, once again, that history kicks ass.

rusty-kuntzKick Ass Fact: Rusty Kuntz hit the game winning RBI in game 5 of the 1984 World Series for the Tigers.  He actually popped it up to right, but Tony Gwynn lost sight of the ball and had to defer to the second baseman, who caught it but couldn’t throw the runner out at home.

A friend and I went to the 1984 Championship Tigers reunion at Comerica Park. I got really excited when I saw a guy named Kuntz. When the announcer came on and said unfortunately Rusty KOONTZ couldn’t be there. We were disappointed until he appeared on the video screen and said, “Hi, I’m Rusty Cunts.”
